PCI Express Right Angle Connector System

The PCI Express (PCIe) Architecture was introduced into the market place about 4 years ago as a result of Intel and other OEMs working together on designing the next generation Bus Architecture. Over the last 10+ years the current PCI Bus protocol has evolved from 32 Bit PCI to 64 Bit PCI, PCI-X, causing the industry’s demand for greater speeds to outstrip the capabilities of PCI. The development of the PCIe protocol has allowed the industry to embrace a new bus architecture that will handle the industry’s demands for the next 10 years. Completely compatible with PCI, the PCIe will allow designers greater flexibility when designing new systems and upgrading existing systems.
The ERNI Right Angle PCIe connector‘s footprint is identical to the standard vertical mount configuration. The connector pins are insert molded into the connector to allow for exact registration of the contacts on both the daughter card side and the board mount thru hole side. The connector itself is molded out of a high temperature plastic. This allows the connector to withstand the higher reflow and IR temperatures required for processing lead free components. The overall rugged construction of this connector is fabricated with the best materials available for the application requirements. The Right Angle design of the connector will enable the engineer to consider more options while designing the product when height is at premium.

Features

• Angled PCIe connector allows the system designer to solve space problems that cannot be solved with vertical PCIe connectors
• Connector enables the add-on card to be mounted parallel to the motherboard, saving space in the overall height of the computer box
• Available in X1, X4, X8 or X16 versions in stack heights of 5.84 mm (.230"), 11.17 mm (.440") and 16.68 mm (.657")
• Meets all PCIe Local Bus Standards Rev. 2.0

M8/M12 I/O Distribution Box

Sensor/Actuator Passive Distribution Box

From sensors and actuators towards control system: ERNI Electronics expands its M8/M12 product line by passive I/O distribution boxes.
Complementary to M8/M12 cable assemblies and field-attachable connectors suitable for industrial use, with I/O distribution boxes ERNI offers another element of the information chain between field devices and control level. Distribution boxes bundle signals from sensors/actuators and establish uplink to the control system. The I/O modules are well accepted within industrial automation not least because they avoid parallel cabling and complex installation towards control units or switch cabinets. Instead of using numerous single cables, sensors and actuators can be directly connected in close vicinity to the machine or process. This concept is simple, efficient and cost-effective.
The usage of common connection technology and standard interfaces allows for:
• reliable connections,
• safety in the automation solution and provides for
• highly available field devices.
The idea of decentralized modules and a more structured installation enables sensor/actuator lines to be easily, quickly and faultlessly replaceable. Hindering cable loops are then a relict of the past. Efficient cabling minimizes downtime of machine or equipment and enables flexibility at installation and maintenance. This saves both time and money and consequently assures competitive advantages.
All distribution boxes of the product range are designed for IP65/IP67 protection and hence are predestined for use in harsh and humid industrial environments. The housing – available in various port numbers – is built in a compact and robust way; fully encapsulated, it withstands vibration to a high extent. Various mounting holes allow for direct attachment on the machine and thus ensure close installation to the process. The connection to the control level is realized by a pre-assembled trunk cable available in different standard lengths. Designed as hybrid cable it is both power supply and data link for sensors and actuators connected to the I/O box.

Areas of application for sensor/actuator boxes

• Assembly and Materials Handling Equipment
• Industrial Automation
• Machine & Plant Engineering
• Robotics
• Test Equipment
• Paper & Printing Industry
• Packaging Industry

Advantage and benefit:

• standard interfaces for signal and power
• compact design to close on-site installation
• reduction of installation and maintenance
• flexibility at upgrade of system or machine
• avoiding machine downtime
• constant availability of application
• cost and time benefits

M8/M12 circular connectors for automation systems

Since the end of the '80s, the trend of integrating more and more electronics and intelligence in machines has rapidly gained momentum. Whereas before, only controls in a switch cabinet regulated actuator or sensor systems by way of so-called I/O cards, today there is an increasing number of intelligent field devices outfitted with local I/Os and connected to the switch cabinet via a fieldbus or even have the entire control system on board.
Up until this point in time, M8 and M12 connectors were only referred to and used as sensor connectors. The open end of the sensor cable was routed in the switch cabinet and wired there. Today, sensors and actuators in the field frequently are connected to a passive I/O box or one with fieldbus capability. The harsh influences of the environment on these boxes make proven and, particularly, tightly sealed (IP 65/67) connectors a necessity. As such, it only made sense to use the M8 or M12 connector systems here as well, which already had established themselves in the field of sensor technology. Meanwhile, the M12 connector also is recommended as a fieldbus connector for almost all field bus applications. To make sure that nothing gets mixed up, there are a series of codes for assistance.
ERNI, the known specialist for printed circuit board connectors, has seized an opportunity. Today, there still is an insufficient number of connector types for these boards. As field devices are very specific, a wide variety of flexible modular connectors is required in order to implement these applications with as little effort and expense as possible.

PCB Connectors

ERNI has developed such a modular system with M8/12 connectors that is fully flexible in application and has SMT connections that are so robust that bulk packaging and feeding are possible. The connector has also been designed for tape-on-reel packaging. The concept allows connectors to be produced at various heights and with different pin configurations. The black insulator is made of high-temperature plastic, and is suitable for soldering with all the usual SMT soldering procedures. The new M8/M12 connectors are designed for lead-free processing, which is mandatory since July 2006. Especially cost cutting by reduction of printed circuit board
surface is achieved. In specific applications, two printed circuit boards can be replaced by one. A pick and place pad for females is not required while using a gripper or special pipette.

Cable Assemblies

As a completion to the product portfolio ERNI Electronics also offers cable assemblies for the connection of sensors/ actuators or other automation systems devices such as I/O distribution boxes. The standard product range covers pre-assembled, over-moulded circular connectors of sizes M8 and M12 either as interconnection of two circular connectors or as a cord set having an open end of line. In addition, the portfolio comprises field-attachable connectors for tool-less cable termination, T-coupler, panel feed-throughs and adapter for quick and cost-efficient connection in the field. ERNI extends the variety with different cable qualities that meet the most versatile industrial requirements and therefore are applicable for a wide range of use. PVC as a competitive and economic solution or PUR (UL/CSA approved), halogen-free and UV resistant, for highly demanding applications in drag chains and harsh environments – where operational reliability is crucial. Innovative product features like the self-securing screw locking guarantee vibration-proof and secure connection. The coupling nut additionally combines a knurled surface with a spanner flat suitable for standard wrenches. Different configurations, designs and codings are available from stock. All parts meet IP67 requirements (IEC 60529) to ensure protection against dust and water immersion. ERNI’s pre-assembled cable assemblies use standard-wise two cable qualities in five different lengths. Further options are possible on request.

DIN 41612 / IEC 60603-2 Female Connectors New Design

ERNI introduces a new design of its female DIN connectors.
The new design offers the following advantages:

• Reduction of press-in force by approx. 25%, using the new „Eye of the Needle“ pressfit zone. This leads to lesser strain towards the PCB.
• 100% controlled quality of the pins due to consequent usage of Automated Optical Inspection during the manufacturing process.
• Partial and mixed loading possible.
Available termination lengths:
Solder: 2.5 mm; 3.7 mm; 4.0 mm; 13.0 mm; 17.0 mm
Pressfit: 2.9 mm; 4.0 mm; 5.5 mm; 13.0 mm w. Transfer Zone; 17.0 mm w. Transfer Zone
Wire Wrap: 13.0 mm; 17.0 mm
• Dimensions of insulation bodies remain unchanged for backwards compatibility.
• Fixation clip or retaining loop for efficient mounting of the connector when soldering is selectable in all positions.
• Solder stop versions, preventing a rising of the solder up into the housing, available on request for type B and C connectors.
• Transfer zone contacts are selectable for all versions.
• A simple coding mechanism, by using coding strips, is standard on all type B, C, E and CD connectors.
• The THR versions are made of a high temperature resistant material which makes them suitable for reflow soldering.

2.54 mm Pin Headers and Sockets

If you need to connect two PCBs which are arranged on top of each other or to attach connecting cables to PCBs inside your equipment, you will find that the ERNI pin header range offers almost countless possibilities. Anything is possible!
This data sheet lists virtually every possible version of our pin header range. However, if specific numbers of pins, contact lengths or contact materials are required for your particular application, please consult us at any time.
For developing our new header range, we have taken todays rationalization types into account. You can pressfit ERNI headers solderless or you can reflow solder them. The solderless pressfit technique is particularly recommended for PCBs with components fitted on both sides.

ERNI's Socket strips are a perfect addition to the 2.54 mm Unshrouded Header System STL. With its 2.54 mm pitch they are fully compatible with all 2-row unshrouded headers. This combination represents an excellent way to connect 2 PCB boards. Socket strips are available with pin configurations of 10, 16, 34, 52, 72 and 94 pins.

ERNI ATCA Zone 1 Power Connector acc. to PICMG 3.0

ERNI is anxious to support customers extensively and is gradually completing the product range for interconnect platforms. This also includes the ATCA ( Advanced Telecom Computing Architecture) standard. This standard (also known as PICMG 3.0) is one of the latest standards addressing future telecommunication needs. ERNI can supply both power and signal connectors.
According to PICMG 3.0 the AdvancedTCA Power Connector is qualified for use in Zone 1. The connector consists of 8 size 16 contacts along with 22 size 22 contacts. The insulation body has an integrated guiding feature. The contact terminals provide compliant pressfit zones for easy assembly to the PCB. The reliability of the pressfit technology has been proven many times in long term field experiences. The pressfit zones are flat-rock compatible, there is no need for special press-in tools. The excellent design fully avoids any risk of damaging the connector during the press-in process.
The use of high conductivity copper alloy allows high current carrying capability. The power contacts are capable of carrying 16A and each signal contact is capable of carrying 2A. The female contacts’ „lead in“ design combined with cavity protection prevent the contacts from being damaged.
Contacts which were plated subsequently do not have any bare ends and therefore are suitable for long term usage in critical environments. A mounting screw (customer supplied) may be used, but is not necessarily required. The connector meets all PICMG 3.0 performance requirements and is fully intermateable with alternative connectors which were designed according to the same standard.

Features

• In accordance with the PICMG 3.0 standard
• Gold over nickel plating in contact area, tin plating on pcb terminals.
• Controlled plating thickness at female mating point
• RoHS compliant
• Stamped female contacts with high conductive material for highest current carrying capacity
• Improved normal contact force and relaxation compared to machined contacts
• Reliable and proven pressfit zone
• Standard flat rock press-in tools
• No additional pcb retention hardware required
• Female contacts fully protected through proven lead-in design
• Positions 1, 2, 3 and 4 are not loaded
• For specific applications partial contact loading is possible

PICMG 3.0 Partnumber: ZP-A-030F-P1-2B
ERNI Partnumber: 214077

Due to todays demand on power solutions, besides a broad range of D-Sub signal connectors, ERNI also offers a worldwide unique technology for D-Sub high current connectors. These connectors were built as pure high current versions or do well known as mixed connectors which are also loaded with signal contacts. There exists a lot of sizes and configurations in the market. ERNI’s advantage is to have the first stamped high current contact in SMT. This enables the customer, of ERNI to earn lots of benefits to their costs and manufacturing.
ERNI D-Sub high current connectors are running at the same production line as standard D-Sub connectors. Therefore signal contacts could be partially loaded easily. As a standard to ERNI the connectors will be delivered in SMT, THR or pressfit technology.
The angled D-Sub power connectors are available in the standard mounting height (7.3mm) in accordance with DIN 41652 and CECC 75301-802.
For fully automatic assembly, the new D-Sub high power connectors are delivered on SMT compatible tape-and-reel or tray packaging. A black insulator body facilitates simple camera recognition (reflection method) and a large pick-and-place
surface enables easy and reliable pick-up with the vacuum pipette. The optimized location of the center of gravity in connection with the positioning pegs holds the D-Sub in position during the soldering process.
The insulator is made of high temperature resistant thermoplastic and is suitable for soldering in all SMT soldering
processes commonly in use.
The new generation of D-Sub connectors already features the lead-free surface.

The versatile applications can be realized thanks to the various connection options, with right angle or vertical male connectors and female connectors with 90° or 180° cable outlet.
The male connector is available with SMT terminals, the female connector has IDC cable connections. The plastic housing of the male connector is able to withstand high temperatures, so the connector is suitable for lead-free reflow soldering processes. The male connectors are available in tape-and-reel packaging for automatic assembly.
With the female connector the cable guide ensures that attaching the cable or single strands is a simple operation. Standard cable assemblies are available. Customized cable assemlies can be easy ordered on request.
